Tigers listed as landing spot for $79 million D-Backs former All-Star

The Detroit Tigers were the first team to 60 wins after a 2-1 victory on Sunday night against the Texas Rangers. They are struggling a bit, but still own the best record in Major League Baseball.

Last year, they operated as sellers at the trade deadline, only to go on an unprecedented second half surge to clinch a Wild Card spot. This year is likely going to be much different given where the Tigers are in the standings.

They have some needs to address. Third base is an area that could use an upgrade.

Russell Dorsey of Yahoo Sports listed Eugenio Suarez as a top trade candidate and had the Tigers as a possible fit.

“Right-handed power is hard to come by in baseball these days, which makes Eugenio Suárez a highly coveted player. The D-backs’ third baseman has been one of the game’s top power threats this season,” Dorsey wrote.

Suarez is slashing .257/.328/.605 with 36 home runs, 85 RBI and a .933 OPS. If he is traded, he’ll be a highly sought-after target.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have not decided what they’re going to do at the trade deadline just yet, which means the two-time All-Star could end up staying put. But he could be a major upgrade at third base for the Tigers.

Detroit has arguably the top farm system of any organization in the league, and they have the prospects to pull off a blockbuster deal such as this. It also would be a reunion of sorts, as Suarez came to the big leagues through the Tigers organization and made his Major League debut with the team in 2014.

He was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in 2015 for Alfredo Simon. But having him back could give Detroit what they need to make a push.

We’ll see if they target Suarez.
