La Liga giants join race for promising Chelsea star

La Liga giants Atletico Madrid are on the lookout for a new centre-back in the ongoing summer transfer window and have turned their attention to promising Chelsea star, Renato Veiga.

The Spanish giants are trying to land the Portuguese international after Tottenham Hotspur refused to negotiate with them for Argentine star Cristian Romero.

According to a report by AS, Diego Simeone and the Atletico hierarchy are now focused on the 21-year-old defender owned by Chelsea after he impressed while on loan at Juventus last season.

He is said to be on the lookout for more playing time and is open to leaving Stamford Bridge for more opportunities. Meanwhile, Chelsea are looking for up to £30 million ($41m) for his services.

While Atletico’s interest in Veiga may seem to be newfound, that is not the case. The player has reportedly been on the club’s radar since his initial days at Basel.

The club monitored him closely before he joined Chelsea in 2024, and they reignited their interest when he was loaned to Juventus in January.

Why a move to Atletico Madrid makes sense for Renato Veiga

Atletico is currently on the lookout for a player to fill the void left by the departures of Reinildo and Cesar Azpilicueta, and Veiga fits the profile both in terms of potential and price.

The Blues are currently well-stocked in the heart of their defence, and it’s unlikely that the young defender will get a chance to play in his position of choice.

Since Spurs have blocked any approach for Romero, Simeone has instructed Atletico to pull out all the stops in their attempts to sign Veiga.

Despite interest from Bayern Munich and Juventus, the Rojiblancos remain the front-runners to land the player and are soon expected to open talks with Chelsea.
