The St. Louis Cardinals will be one of baseball’s more active teams at this month’s trade deadline. At 51-48, and a few games outside of the National League playoff picture, the team must evaluate which direction they wish to go in for the remainder of the season.
Many of the Cardinals’ starting pitchers have been rumored to be moved ahead of the deadline. However, as Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports, a number of the team’s starters have no interest in being traded, and will act accordingly to prevent an undesired deal.
“Cardinals starters Sonny Gray and Miles Mikolas still say they have no interest in leaving St. Louis, and would exercise their no-trade clauses to veto any potential deals,” Nightengale wrote.
Gray and Mikolas have both been highly sought after on the trade market, but it appears for now that neither will be on the move.
Gray this season is 9-4 with a 4.04 ERA. He saw his ERA jump from 3.50 to his new mark thanks to a miserable outing against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday in which he gave up eight earned runs and 11 hits in 3.1 innings of work.
Mikolas is 5-6 with a 4.94 ERA this season. After giving up 14 earned runs combined over his last 10 innings of work, Mikolas bounced back nicely in his last start on July 10 against the Washington Nationals, pitching 5.2 innings of shutout baseball.
