Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery is one of the angriest runners in the NFL and that isn’t going to change in 2025.
Montgomery has been a key piece in the Lions offense over his two years with the team andforms one of the best one-two punches in the NFL with fellow back, Jahmyr Gibbs.
But Montgomery feels like he was forgotten in the offense last season after he went down with a knee injury that forced him to miss the final three contests of 2024.
As a result, Montgomery is operating with a big chip on his shoulder this year, he admitted after the Lions’ first practice of training camp on Sunday.
“This is probably the hungriest that I have been because I feel like a lot of people kind of forget that I’m here in the offense, too,” he said, according to ESPN’s Eric Woodyard.
Montgomery injured his MCL in Week 14, a knee injury that was initially believed to be season-ending. Instead, Montgomery rehabbed the knee and was able to return for the Lions’ playoff loss to the Washington Commanders.
During his absence, Gibbs stole the show with three 100-yard performances that also included six total touchdowns (five rushing) and 122 receiving yards.
Gibbs was so good in a workhorse role that many wondered if the Lions should cut Montgomery’s snaps in favor of giving the younger back more work.
Clearly that did not sit well with Montgomery, who is now out to show he should return to the exact role he had alongside Gibbs before getting hurt.
