Chargers’ Quentin Johnston embraces ‘next man up’ mentality after Mike Williams’ retirement

The Los Angeles Chargers were dealt an unexpected blow when veteran wide receiver Mike Williams announced his abrupt retirement just days before training camp. Williams steps away from football due to persistent injuries after playing eight seasons in the NFL.

Williams was expected to begin his second stint with the Chargers after splitting time last season with the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers. Williams, the Chargers’ No. 7 pick in the 2017 draft, ranks 10th on the Chargers’ franchise receiving yards list with 4,806 yards. He is 13th in receptions (309) and touchdowns (31).

Williams, a trusted target for Justin Herbert, was expected to be a key part of the offense heading into 2025. Instead, his sudden exit has left a void and immediate questions about the wide receiver depth.

Now, Chargers fans will expect other offensive players to step up in Williams’ absence. That’s exactly what wide receiver Quentin Johnston emphasized following training camp on Saturday.

“The past three years of me knowing him, me coming in and being mentored by him means a lot,” Johnston said. “Just knowing him as a person on and off the field, I’m happy for him, happy with his decision and I wish him the best.”

Johnston then discussed how they are treating the situation.

“At this point, we’re kind of treating it like a next man up,” Johnston said. “Him leaving was kind of unexpected, but at the same time we kind of just have to fill in the blank and keep moving.”

Quentin Johnston will need to take on a larger role and build the kind of connection with Justin Herbert that Mike Williams once had, especially if the Los Angeles Chargers hope to sustain playoff aspirations in a loaded AFC West.
