The Pittsburgh Steelers managed to land Aaron Rodgers in free agency this summer after weeks of delays due to personal matters. He enters what is likely his final NFL season, but even Steelers fans are unsure how to feel about the signing. Some have already purchased his merchandise—planning to burn it.
Former Steelers linebacker James Harrison believes Rodgers may not live up to expectations and could be released midseason.
“If [the Steelers] start losing and it’s looking like they ain’t gonna make above .500, I think it gets real ugly, real fast,” Harrison said. “To the point where they may just be like, ‘You know what, let’s let this dude go midseason. For Aaron, let’s just get him outta here and put one of these other quarterbacks in.’ Mike [Tomlin] ain’t going nowhere.”
Signing Rodgers on a one-year rental is a risky move, especially with the possibility of being stuck in the same situation next offseason. According to ESPN’s Ryan Clark, acquiring Rodgers represents a worst-case scenario. He believes the Steelers will be just good enough to miss out on landing a top quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft.
In a recent mock draft by Owain Jones of Pro Football Network, he projects the Steelers selecting LaNorris Sellers from South Carolina.
“LaNorris Sellers is loaded with physical traits and possesses the tools to be a highly sought-after pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. However, he still has some room to grow as a passer. At 6’3” and 240 pounds, the South Carolina Gamecocks quarterback is uniquely built and has all the arm talent to be a success in the NFL,” Jones wrote. “However, despite his 66% completion percentage, Sellers put the ball in harm’s way far too often, consistently missed open receivers, and doesn’t always correctly read defenses pre-snap.”

There’s clearly room for growth, but if Sellers sharpens those areas during the season, he could be ready for Pittsburgh. When he’s on, he’s nearly unstoppable—but too often, he’s careless with the football.
