Phillies eye Kyle Schwarber extension as slugger powers through season

Kyle Schwarber’s home runs keep landing in the seats, and the Philadelphia Phillies aren’t looking to let him walk away anytime soon.

As his four-year, $79 million deal comes to an end, the Phillies remain focused on locking up the veteran bomber for the long haul. The 32-year-old is fresh off a standout All-Star Game, where he hit three bombs to win MVP in the event’s first-ever swing-off.

Team president John Middleton didn’t hold back before the series opener against the Angels.

Phillies Want Kyle Schwarber to Stay Beyond 2025

“We love Kyle,” Middleton said. “We’re committed to keeping him here.”

Schwarber enters the second half of the season with 30 home runs and 69 RBIs, helping lead the Phillies to the top of the NL East. He’s hit 46, 47, and 38 homers in each of the past three seasons, and he’s driven in over 100 runs two years in a row. Even with his move from the leadoff spot, his power production hasn’t slowed.

Middleton praised Schwarber for everything from his performance on the field to his leadership off it.

“There’s nothing he does that surprises us. He’s been everything we hoped for and more,” he said.

Schwarber’s next deal is expected to go well beyond his current $79 million contract. Since arriving in Philly, his moonshot home runs, nicknamed “Schwarbombs”, have made him a fan favorite.

He has playoff experience, including a World Series title with the Cubs in 2016. After stints in Washington and Boston, he seems to have found a long-term home in Philadelphia.

During the All-Star break, Schwarber was asked about his future and whether he expects to stay with the Phillies.

“There’s interest on my side,” he said. “Talks didn’t move much in the spring, so we decided to focus on the season. We’ll see what happens after that.”

As the Phillies look to win the NL East crown, the talk of where the slugger will be playing next year is the elephant in the room.
