The Reds have slapped a €100 million [$116m] asking price for the 28-year-old, and it remains to be seen if they budge for anything less.
Recent updates from Fabrizio Romano have stirred a different twist to the transfer saga as he suggests that Bayern have identified Lyon’s Malick Fofana as an alternative to Diaz.
Fofana, who has earned a lot of plaudits for his performances last season for Lyon, has been on the radar of many clubs due to his parent club’s condition this summer.
If Bayern miss out on Diaz, then they will push for the 20-year-old Belgian who is admired by their manager, Kompany.

The Bavarians have reportedly made contact and asked about a potential deal for the 20-year-old Belgian winger.
Lyon have been forced to sell players this summer due to financial instability and nearly avoided relegation to Ligue 2.
So Fofana shouldn’t cost Bayern or any other team a fortune, and given his attributes and his age, the Belgian could be a game-changing signing wherever he moves.
The 20-year-old netted 11 goals and provided five assists in 41 appearances across all competitions last season.
Fofana is known for his dribbling, directness and his two-footedness, which allows him to play on either flank.
As per Fbref, he averaged 6.72 progressive carries, 6.08 touches in the attacking penalty area, 11.43 progressive passes received and 0.47 non-penalty goals per 90 minutes.
Fofana’s statistics and attributes induce a lot of confidence, as he could be an ideal fit in Bavaria, considering they have a dearth of options on the wings.
While a move for Fofana looks extremely exciting, Bayern are still holding him as an alternative as Diaz remains a priority this summer.
