One day can change a lot in the NFL.
The Los Angeles Chargers were ready to open training camp without their second-round pick, Tre Harris, who was doing what almost every second-round pick in this year’s class was doing — holding out for guaranteed money.
However, following the sudden retirement of veteran wide receiver Mike Williams, the team has reversed that course and made sure to get the rookie under contract.
This was the right move for the team to make, and really the only one that made sense in the situation. Williams’ status put the team in a tough spot, and it makes no sense to keep a young player away from valuable practice time in a stalemate over money.
Harris will now come in and have a chance to win the No. 2 receiver job right out of the gate.
Harris caught 220 passes for 3,532 and 29 touchdowns during his college playing career at Louisiana Tech and Ole Miss. He averaged over 16 yards per catch.
In the NFL, the Chargers hope to have a speedy, big-bodied wide receiver who can be a huge weapon down the field for Justin Herbert. However, even with Harris under contract, it would be wise for the team to look outside the organization for more wide receiver help.
