In this series, we take a look at each team and see what they’ve done over the offseason. Next up is the Vancouver Canucks.
Key additions: Evander Kane, Joseph LaBate, Pierre-Oliver Joseph, Jimmy Schuldt
The Canucks added hometown native Evander Kane to the fold, he will add more excitement to a team that is never boring. But, the Canucks offseason is less about what they have gained/lost and more about who they’ve managed to keep. Vancouver extended Brock Boeser to a 7 year contract after virtually the entire NHL universe thought he would be gone. They also got extensions done with Thatcher Demko and Conor Garland.
Key subtractions: Pius Suter, Phil Di Giuseppe, Noah Juulsen, Arturs Silovs
Vancouver’s biggest loss of the offseason is Pius Suter, who was one of the few bright spots in what was a disastrous season for the club last year. The Nucks also lost a couple depth players and goaltender Arturs Silovs. With the Demko and Lankinen tandem locked up there was no more room for Silovs.
Highest draft pick: Braeden Cootes, 15th overall
Salary cap space: $795k
Staff: Vancouver GM Patrik Alvin has brought in a new coaching staff after previous head coach Rick Tocchet denied a rich contract extension in favor of a new home in Philadelphia. Adam Foote will be the new coach of the Canucks, having previously been an assistant with the organization the past 3 seasons.
Other: The future of Canucks top defenseman Quinn Hughes with the team will be something to keep an eye on as contract extension negotiations will soon be underway. Does Quinn stick around in Vancouver or jump ship to New Jersey to play with his brothers as has been persistently speculated?
