Paul George injury update: 76ers star undergoes procedure on left knee after suffering injury during workout

After playing in just 41 games last season, Paul George’s injury status is once again a cause for concern this summer.

The 76ers star, who signed a four-year maximum contract last offseason before Philadelphia struggled to 24 wins, suffered a knee injury during a recent workout, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.

George then underwent a procedure for the injury, and he’s set to be re-evaluated before training camp begins for the 2025-26 season.

Paul George injury update

On Monday, Charania reported that George, coming off a down season by his standards in 2024-25, suffered a left knee injury during a recent workout. He then underwent a successful “arthroscopic procedure” on that left knee.

The 76ers then confirmed the report in a statement, writing that Dr. Jonathan L. Gladhow performed the procedure on Monday, and George would be re-evaluated before training camp.

Kyle Neubeck also reported that the procedure was “essentially an arthroscopic clean up” and “did not involve the major ligaments.”

For George, it’s another setback — and an unexpected one in the middle of the offseason, adding to his growing history of knee injuries. He played in just 41 games last season, averaging his lowest points per game (16.2) since 2014-15 when an injury held him to just six games.

During the 2024 preseason, he hyperextended his left knee, causing him to miss the first few games of his 76ers tenure. Then, in November, he missed more games with the left knee ailment, and as the 76ers limped to a 24-win season, he sat out from March 4 on with what the team called a groin injury.

While injuries have defined his time in Philadelphia so far, George also has a history of setbacks with other squads, as well. In 2021-22, as a member of the Clippers, he missed 43 games due to a torn UCL in his right elbow, and in 2019-20, he had shoulder surgery and missed 11 games.

Even going back to the earlier years of his career, George has been sidelined with more serious injuries. As a young star with the Pacers, George suffered a compound leg fracture that held him to just six games in 2014-15.

Now, as he’s entering the latter half of his 30s, knee ailments continue to hamper George, a nine-time All-Star.

Will Paul George be ready for the start of the 2025-26 season?

It remains to be seen if George will be ready for the start of the new NBA season, which begins in October. Philadelphia said in its statement that George will be re-evaluated at the start of training camp, which typically begins around the end of September or beginning of October.

If he does miss the start of the 2025-26 season, it would be the second-straight campaign that the star has been sidelined for the opening of the season due to a knee injury.

76ers injuries since 2024

It remains to be seen if it will impact the 2025-26 season at all, but George’s latest setback is yet another blow for the 76ers’ health as a team. Injuries to George, Joel Embiid, Jared McCain, and more played a significant role in the squad winning just 24 games last season, then securing a lottery pick.

  • Paul George, knee (played 41 games)
  • Joel Embiid, knee (played 19 games)

  • Kyle Lowry, hip (played 35 games)
  • Tyrese Maxey, finger (played 52 games)
