After 13 seasons in the NFL, former Detroit Lions first-round pick Ndamukong Suh is officially retiring.
Suh, who hasn’t played a snap in the league since 2022, made the announcement on social media, which was accompanied by a tribute to his late father, who passed away one year ago.
“Before he passed, he gave me one final piece of advice, ‘It’s time to let football go. You’ve done everything you set out to do. Now it’s time for the next chapter,'” Suh said of his late father, who died on July 12, 2024.
“That conversation stayed with me. So today, one year later, I’m honoring that wish,” Suh added. “I’m officially retiring from the NFL.”
Suh was the No. 2 overall pick of the Lions in 2010 and ended up spending five years with the team before moving on in free agency with the Miami Dolphins in 2015, where he spent three seasons.
Suh also appeared in contests with the Los Angeles Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Philadelphia Eagles. He won a Super Bowl with the Bucs in 2020.
In all, Suh garnered five Pro Bowl nods and five All-Pro selections, including three first-team nods, and he was the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2010.
The former defensive lineman recently announced that he’s starting a podcast called “No Free Lunch.”
“Suh will explore how the most successful people in sports are building long-term wealth, and what we can learn from their experiences,” the show’s description says.
“In every episode, Suh will talk with athletes, experts, business leaders, and recurring contributors about their personal journeys to success, and explore the latest business ideas and trends — all filtered through the world of sports.”
