Knicks linked to Defensive Player of the Year winner to pair with Jalen Brunson

The last thing the New York Knicks should do is sign someone just to do so.

The Knicks still have an open roster spot, but they have plenty of time to figure things out. In fact, they can even wait till the middle of the season, if they want.

The Knicks are in a good position to attract some of the top free agents remaining on the market, and with multiple players expected to be bought out, why rush?

That’s the same sentiment that Empire Sports Media recently had, adding that if the Knicks are wise and wait for the right options, they might have an opportunity to land Marcus Smart of the Washington Wizards.

Smart has been named a potential buyout candidate for the Wizards by some, and if he’s bought out, he’d be ideal in New York, given his defensive intensity and offensive abilities.

“The New York Knicks aren’t rushing to fill their last roster spot, and there’s good reason for that cautious patience. They still have room for a veteran minimum contract and might be waiting to see which experienced names shake loose in the buyout market. That’s where Marcus Smart comes into the picture as an intriguing possibility for a team looking to tighten its title window,” they wrote.

Smart would mostly be needed on the defensive side of the basketball, but he’s also a decent offensive player.

He has some turnover issues and gets a bit out of control at times, but he’s also proven that he knows how to run an offense.

He was much better with the Boston Celtics than he was with the Memphis Grizzlies and Wizards, but a lot of that’s likely due to the injuries he’s dealt with.

If he can come to New York and be healthy, the Knicks could be adding a former Defensive Player of the Year winner candidate for a very cheap price.
