Newcastle eye next major signing with £40m bid after securing Elanga deal

Newcastle United have acted swiftly during the summer transfer window and manager Eddie Howe continues to keep his foot on the gas in an attempt to strengthen key departments before the new season takes shape.

The club have completed a £55 million [$74m] deal for Anthony Elanga, who impressed with last season’s Nottingham Forest and will add much-needed pace and directness to the wings

Before that, the Magpies also agreed to terms with 18-year-old Antonio Cordero from Sevilla, a highly rated midfielder who has already caught the eye in Spain’s youth circuit and is seen as one for the future.

With two attacking players in the bag, Newcastle are now looking at their options at the back, and their attention has turned to the goalkeeper position.

Newcastle ramping their effort to sign Burnley’s James Trafford

The Magpies are stepping up their pursuit of Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford as they prepare for life without Martin Dubravka, who is expected to leave the club this summer.

Trafford played a huge part in Burnley’s promotion last season by keeping 29 clean sheets in 45 matches, a record that quickly caught the eye of clubs across the Premier League.

The Tyneside club had previously seen multiple approaches rejected by Burnley, but according to The Football Insider, the club has now submitted a new £40 million [$54m] offer, with nearly half of that based on performance-related add-ons, and there’s growing belief that this improved bid could finally meet Burnley’s demands.

If Newcastle manage to secure Trafford’s signing, manager Eddie Howe is likely to shift his focus towards a centre-back, with Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi already being discussed as a serious target for the next phase of their summer rebuild.
