Cherneka Johnson dominates at MSG to become new undisputed bantamweight champion

Cherneka Johnson (18-2) is the new undisputed bantamweight champion of the world.

The Australian boxer dominated Shurretta Metcalf (14-5-1) at Madison Square Garden on Friday night (local time) to bring all four major titles together.

Johnson (18-2) secured a TKO victory early in the ninth round.

It was a one-sided fight until that point, with referee Charlie Fitch calling time despite the 40-year-old American being keen to continue.

The result sees New Zealand-born Johnson retain her WBA title, take the IBF belt from Metcalf and win the vacant WBC and WBO belts.

Both the WBC and WBO belts were previously held by Dina Thorslund, who was initially slated to face Metcalf but withdrew late due to pregnancy.

Johnson was on top from the start of the fight, which featured as a prelim on the Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano III card.

She found success with her right hand across the opening rounds and dropped Metcalf in the fourth round.

The 30-year-old added left hooks to her repertoire in the later stages before the referee decided he had seen enough.

Johnson notably becomes the first Australian boxer to be named an undisputed champion in the four-belt era.

“I envisioned this moment, so I already feel like I’ve been here before,” Johnson said after the fight.

“She was very tough, a great opponent. She had a long jab, but I was listening to my team.

“Probably, if I put on the gas a little more in the fifth or sixth round, I could have stopped her earlier, but we got the job done.”
