This may be James Cook’s last season in Buffalo.
The Bills are holding firm in contract negotiations with their star running back, and new insight suggests that may not change.
The Athletic broke down the Cook contract situation recently as he enters his final season of his current deal. This is the key line from beat writer Joe Buscaglia: “If the sides don’t get close to a deal, the Bills aren’t going to force the issue, as they have long stuck to their values even with in-house players.”
Cook made it clear early in the offseason he believes he’s worth $15 million per year.
He won’t be getting that.
But is there a compromise here? So far, no dice.

Cook was one of the best running backs in football in 2024, so the Bills will gladly let him repeat that season in 2025.
But after that, if Cook isn’t willing to meet Buffalo’s offer at some midpoint, he might be looking for a new team.
In this era of running back interchangeability, the Bills might feel that’s just fine. But the Buffalo faithful would surely love to see a deal done here. It’ll be a situation worth watching as the season approaches and maybe even into the 2025 campaign.
