Yankees could be ‘really good fit’ for D-Backs former All-Star, per insider

The New York Yankees have been struggling a bit as of late. They recently had a six-game losing streak and also watched a seven-game lead in the American League East in June disappear.

New York is now 2 1/2 games behind the first place Toronto Blue Jays. Their starting rotation has been hit hard with injuries.

Luis Gil is almost back, but Gerrit Cole is out for the season and Clarke Schmidt recently went on the injured list. He is also now on the shelf for the rest of 2025.

Jon Morosi of MLB Network proposed an interesting idea, that if the Arizona Diamondbacks sell, the Yankees could take a flier on Zac Gallen.

“”I think Zac Gallen and the Yankees would be a really good fit if the D-backs ultimately decide to potentially move,” Morosi said on Thursday.

Gallen has struggled this season, going 7-9 in 19 starts with a 5.15 ERA. He still has pitched 110 innings and struck out 107 batters.

But if Arizona continues to struggle, then it is very possible that they could decide to move the veteran right-hander.

Gallen is a free agent at the end of the year, but due to his struggles, he may not cost any top prospects, something the Bronx Bombers are low on at the moment. But adding him to their rotation could give them the push they need to retake the lead in the AL East.

The former All-Star can still eat innings and can be counted on for strikeouts, even with a lower rate per nine innings this year.

Ultimately, it depends on if Arizona buys or sells. They haven’t declared themselves a seller, but that could change if they continue to struggle, and Gallen could be a potential trade piece.
