The Washington Nationals have had a rough season behind the plate.
They’re taking a low-risk swing at landing a guy who might help them at the catcher position.
Earlier this week, the Nationals signed Francisco Mejia to a minor-league contract.
Mejia was once a top-25 prospect in all of baseball in the Cleveland organization.
He never quite panned out, and he has spent 355 MLB games spread across Cleveland, San Diego and Tampa Bay.
In his career, he has batted .239 at the MLB level with a .394 slugging percentage.

Mejia spent most of 2024 at Triple-A Nashville in the Brewers organization, batting .274.
This season, Mejia went to Mexico City to play for los Diablos Rojos in the Mexican League. He was batting .341 with five homers and 15 doubles when he departed.
Mejia has been assigned to Triple-A Rochester.

The Nats’ top catcher is Keibert Ruiz, but he is now on the concussion injured list for the second time this season.
They have light-hitting catchers Riley Adams and Drew Millas on the MLB roster currently.
Mejia, 29, should be a better hitter than both those guys at the MLB level right now. It probably won’t be long until he gets a call-up to see what he can still do.
