This season, the Dallas Mavericks will be ushering in a new era with No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg. As he gears up for his first action in the pros, the touted prospect gave his thoughts on being utilized in a variety of ways.
Part of what made Flagg so tantalizing as a prospect was his ability to do just about everything on the floor in a 6-foot-9 frame. Jason Kidd is looking to maximize his talents by putting him in countless different positions and situations as a rookie. One of the main things he’s tossed out thus far is having Flagg play point guard. This will be an area of need for Dallas to kick off the 2026 campaign while Kyrie Irving continues to recover from his ACL injury.
While speaking with the media Tuesday, Flagg was asked about Kidd wanting to deploy him at point guard. He is very open to testing out different looks in his rookie campaign and is confident he can be a lead ballhandler in the NBA.
“I’m looking forward to it,” Flagg told reporters. “I think it’s something I can do at a high level so I’m excited to just experiment and do some new things.”

Tossing a bigger wing at point guard isn’t something new for Kidd. He did a similar experiment with Giannis Antetokounmpo on the Milwaukee Bucks, and it yielded positive results. Seeing that Flagg is much farther along as a prospect, Kidd is hoping to have similar success with his newest prospect.
Flagg getting comfortable as a primary ballhandler would help the Mavericks in a variety of ways. For starters, it would make him an even bigger threat in transition. Also, with Flagg at point guard, Dallas could have the versatility to deploy more jumbo-sized lineups.
We could potentially see the first look at Flagg playing point guard this week, as he is set to make his Summer League debut Thursday night against the LA Lakers.
