A tough task lies ahead for American star and World No. 10 Ben Shelton, as he takes on World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the 2025 Wimbledon quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Shelton has been in fine form at this year’s Wimbledon, with the 22-year old only dropping one set en route the last eight. He defeated Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego 3-6, 6-1, 7-6, 7-5 in the fourth round to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinal for the first time.
While Sinner has been dominant so far in the tournament, he may consider himself somewhat fortunate after his fourth-round opponent, Grigor Dimitrov, had to retire from the match. The Bulgarian was playing lights-out tennis and had taken a 2-0 lead over Sinner when a pectoral injury brought a tearful end to what could have been a famous triumph.
The World No 1 has the psychological edge coming into the quarterfinals, having won five of the six clashes against Shelton, including their last match-up at the 2024 Australian Open semifinals. However, Sinner himself was dealing with an elbow issue during his match against Dimitrov and question marks over his fitness remain.
