There are only a few teams in the league that will enter next season as championship contenders, and making the right moves around the edges can solidify that status.
The New York Knicks are among the group of teams that believe they can win a championship next season. After earning their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance in 25 years, the team hired Mike Brown to replace Tom Thibodeau and have already added Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele in free agency.
Considering the Knicks are also returning their core from last season, this is already gearing up to be a special year in New York. However, there are still a few moves the Knicks need to make to ensure they are ready to compete next season.
One of those moves is to add some more talent in free agency. Under Thibodeau last season, the Knicks’ lack of depth was often a major storyline. With a deep run to the conference finals now under their belts, the Knicks could use another reliable piece off the bench, which could be as simple as re-signing Landry Shamet.
Last season, Shamet shot 39.7% from deep and was used as someone to stretch the floor in the postseason. Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus predicted that Shamet, one of the top remaining free agents, would return to the Knicks next season after a solid first year in New York.
If Shamet can build on his first year with the Knicks, he might be able to turn into a fan favorite, considering his outside shooting ability. Only time will tell where Shamet ends up next, but the Knicks would be wise to keep him around.
