Series: Carolina Hurricanes offseason recap

In this series, we take a look at each team and see what they’ve done over the offseason. Next up is the Carolina Hurricanes.

Key additions: Nikolaj Ehlers, K’Andre Miller, Mike Reilly, Cayden Primeau

The Hurricanes got the most sought after free agent besides Mitch Marner in Nikolaj Ehlers to add to their loaded top 6 core. They added 25 year old K’Andre Miller to the D core to help fill the void of some veteran losses on the backend. They also got a crucial contract extension done with Logan Stankoven, their biggest piece in the Mikko Rantanen trade.

Key subtractions: Brent Burns, Dmitri Orlov, Jack Roslovic, Scott Morrow, Tyson Jost, Spencer Martin, Riley Stillman

The Canes did lose quite a bit of backend depth with the losses of Brent Burns and Dmitri Orlov. They are hoping the addition of Miller along with the possibility of young Russian dman Alexander Nikishin coming into the fold will make up for that. Besides Roslovic, they did not lose much up front on offense.

Highest draft pick: Semyon Frolov, 40th overall

Salary cap space: $10.6 million

Staff: The Canes will be rolling with the same staff next season. Current coach and former Canes player Rod Brind’Amour has been with the team since the 2018-2019 season.

Other: The Canes do not appear to have much more unfinished business to take care of over the summer. They have retained their status as the strongest team in a weak Metro division. Their biggest question mark would be the center position, with Jesperi Kotkaniemi currently slated as the 2C.
