NBA insider predicts major shakeup in Cam Thomas contract negotiations

The 2025 offseason has been a rough one for restricted free agents.

Brooklyn Nets’ Cam Thomas has been one of the many RFAs still available.

An NBA insider was able to give some good insight into why one of the league’s better scorers hasn’t signed a new deal yet.

What is Cam Thomas’ current status?

ESPN’s Tim MacMahon recently appeared on a podcast where he discussed Cam Thomas’ offseason status.

In response to a question about why nothing has happened yet, “I would say Cam Thomas wants to be paid and apparently the Nets aren’t too eager to pay him.”

Thomas has shown on multiple occasions the potential he has, but his lack of consistency and weaknesses in certain areas have created some concerns.

He wants to be paid what he’s shown his value at his highest potential can be, but it’s a tough price to pay with the questions surrounding him.

Large contracts are hard to get off of, but at the same time, teams don’t want to lose their players for nothing.

It’s a tough dilemma that teams face, but they often end up ‘giving in’ to save the asset or trading them away to ensure some value back.

MacMahon added, “My guess is that he is back in Brooklyn when next season starts…probably not on a long-term deal.

The Nets are still a rebuilding team, so they will likely be cautious with this contract decision/negotiation.

Like MacMahon said, they may choose to give him a shorter-term deal that’s less risky, just in case it becomes a bad contract in the future.
