Browns veterans have preferred starting quarterback and it isn’t Shedeur Sanders

The Cleveland Browns will have a four-man competition at quarterback in training camp later this month.

The four-man competition will see veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett and rookies Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel vying for the starting job.

When it comes to the preferred choice of the Browns’ veterans, including superstar edge rusher Myles Garrett, Flacco appears to be the preference, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.

“He’s already felt the love from Browns fans, and has the full support of big-time veterans such as All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett,” she wrote of Flacco. “Flacco might not get many as many snaps in practice as the others because he doesn’t need them, but the Browns know what he can do.”

Not exactly a shocking turn of events.

After all, the former Super Bowl champion figures to be the best bet in terms of giving the Browns a chance to compete to start the season.

Plus, we’ve already seen Flacco thrive in Cleveland, where he went 4-1 as a starter in 2023 during a season in which he revived his career.

The expectation has been that if Flacco wins the starting job over Pickett, the latter would be cut or traded, leaving the two rookies to develop behind Flacco.

From there, how long Flacco keeps the starting job will depend upon how well the Browns do.

He’ll continue being the starter as long as the Browns are in the playoff race. But, if the Browns fall out of playoff contention, they will inevitably get a look at Gabriel and Sanders to see if either one can be the future at the position.
