Lothar Matthaus wants Bayern Munich to reconsider star player’s contract following Musiala’s injury

Bayern Munich’s FIFA Club World Cup journey came to an abrupt end as they lost 2-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in the quarterfinals of the tournament.

However the defeat was just one negative for Vincent Kompany, with the Belgian coach also confirming a serious injury to Jamal Musiala, after the German star collided with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in the first half.

That changed the tone of the game, as second half goals from Desire Doue and Dembele eased PSG into a semifinal meeting with Real Madrid.

According to reports via BILD, Musiala has broken his left fibula and damaged ankle ligaments, with an expected absence of at least 4-5 months.

It’s a fresh blow for the 22-year-old, who had only just returned from injury, and Kompany will now need to reconsider his plans for the coming months.

Bayern Munich have consistently struggled to secure key transfer targets this summer, but due to the latest update on Musialia hading into the 2025/26 campaign, their need for new faces has grown more pressing.

Former Bayern midfielder and football pundit Lothar Matthaus has urged the Bavarians to opt for a bold solution via a short six-month contract to outgoing legend Thomas Muller to cover Musiala’s absence.

“Jamal Musiala’s injury totally shocked me, especially after he’d fought his way back into the starting lineup. I wish him all the best. In this situation, Bayern should consider whether to give Thomas Müller a six-month contract,” Matthaus told BILD.

“The season in the USA only restarts by then, and in the meantime, he could be a great help to Bayern. Bayern did something similar with me when I moved to the New York Metro Stars. The fans would certainly be happy, too.”

Officially, Muller has played his last match for Bayern Munich, after the club decided not to extend his contract beyond the 2024/25 season.

However, nothing has been confirmed, with the veteran attacker fully focused on Club World Cup duty.

When asked about Matthaus’ suggestion of a six-month contract to help Bayern Munich, he told DAZN Germany, “I understand why you ask this question, but it’s a bit – I’m not saying tasteless – but it feels uncomfortable to me.”

Even Bayern chief Max Eberl didn’t entertain the idea after the PSG defeat, as he said, “That’s not in our thoughts. We didn’t talk about that.”

The Bavarians will now continue their search for a high-profile left winger, but they may also look for a No.10 to play behind Harry Kane in Musiala’s absence.
