The Boston Celtics have a weird situation on their hands. Just a few weeks ago, they were favored to repeat as NBA champions. Now they’ve traded two core players from their championship team, will likely lose another to free agency, and are set to miss their best player for all of next season.
That’s why the Celtics’ free agency and trade rumors have been making all of the headlines.
The Celtics are trying to make moves that position them to contend again when Jayson Tatum returns from injury.
Now, the Celtics have been linked to another injured superstar who will be taking next season off.
Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe recently reported that the Celtics and Damian Lillard have shown mutual interest in joining up.
A Damian Lillard Celtics signing would be the perfect situation for both sides.
The Celtics could get a star for cheap. Lillard would rehab with Tatum for a season and bring a huge new offensive element to the team in 2026–27.
After a year of rehab, Lillard would get to fulfill his wish of competing for an NBA title.
With their current cap situation, the Celtics would love to sign a star who was bought out to a team-friendly deal. If the Celtics can land Lillard while he is cheap and readily available, they’ll be in a great position to contend in two seasons.
