Knicks could cut ties with Tyler Kolek to open roster spot, per writer

The New York Knicks roster is in an intriguing spot, as they’re certainly good enough to win a championship, but might need a bit more.

However, the Knicks currently have only one more roster spot available, so they’d have to get creative if they want to move on from someone.

When searching for who they could trade, The Daily News recently proposed the idea of them moving on from Tyler Kolek, their draft pick from the 2024 NBA draft.

“Only if they clear some cap space in a salary dump. The Knicks could trade Tyler Kolek and his $2.2M salary to a team for a future second-round pick, which would increase their room beneath the second-apron hard cap to roughly $5.7M. This would give the Knicks enough room to sign two players to minimum contracts,” they wrote.

There were times throughout the year when Kolek showed that he could play in the NBA. However, it wasn’t enough to suggest that the Knicks have something there.

It isn’t a bad idea to keep him on the roster, but if the plan is to only play him for a few minutes a night, as he played 7.2 minutes per game and appeared in 41 games, moving on from him makes some sense.

Ultimately, things might be much different under Mike Brown. Brown has made some questionable decisions in the past with his lineups, but he’s much different than Tom Thibodeau. Thibodeau didn’t like to play young guys, and he certainly didn’t love to expand the rotation.

For that reason alone, there might be space for Kolek on this roster.
