Quarterback Will Howard may or may not be the future at the position for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Howard was taken in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL draft, and while he has shown some positives in his first offseason, there’s still a long way to go.
Stacking the deck against Howard is the fact that he’s a late-round pick. Of course, we’ve seen late-round quarterbacks thrive before, but the chances aren’t great.
If Howard isn’t able to buck the trend with late-round quarterbacks, the Steelers will almost certainly be looking for their next quarterback in the 2026 NFL draft, as this year’s starter, Aaron Rodgers, isn’t expected to play beyond 2025.
In the event all that happens, Pro Football and Sports Network’s Max Dorsey sees the Steelers landing LSU signal-caller Garrett Nussmeier with the No. 19 overall selection in the 2026 NFL draft.
“Out of all the highly touted quarterback prospects in this draft class, Nussmeier is the least physically gifted. That said, he’s a true point guard and dissects defenses both pre- and post-snap at a high level,” Dorsey wrote.
“While he doesn’t have the biggest arm, Nussmeier can still make all the downfield throws. If they were to select him, he would be the best young quarterback the Steelers have had in years,” Dorsey concluded.
Nussmeier put up massive numbers at LSU last season, with the young quarterback throwing for 4,052 yards and 29 touchdowns to 12 interception while also having completed 64.2% of his passes.
The award-winning LSU signal-caller doesn’t have the mobility you would like to see from an NFL quarterback in this day and age, but he has a strong command of the offense he leads and has enough arm talent to be successful.
The Steelers figure to be a borderline playoff team this season, so a pick in the middle of the first round is likely. That puts them in range of where Nussmeier figures to land, so he could be a Steeler in 2026.
