MLB writer believes Astros’ Yordan Alvarez could miss entire season

It’s unfortunate that Yordan Alvarez hasn’t been on the field for the Houston Astros. It just goes to show how good the Astros are, as they’ve continued to win games despite him not appearing in a contest since May 2.

Prior to going down, Alvarez wasn’t playing well, hitting just .210 with three home runs in 100 at-bats. For the big left-handed slugging 28-year-old, who is typically one of the better players in baseball, it was clear that something was wrong.

The injury has only lingered.

He suffered a setback on Wednesday with his hitting program and will now be shut down. It’s been reported that he’ll see a specialist.

And according to Sports Illustrated’s Michael Brauner, that could mean that Alvarez will miss the rest of the season.

“Though there has been no definitive update regarding what this means for Alvarez, clearly he is not as close to being back as the team and fans may have thought.

“Speculating can be dangerous, but having already missed two months and now being shut down once again, Alvarez is not trending in a direction that looks like he will be helping the team in 2025,” he wrote.

As he noted, speculating on injuries isn’t ideal, and it might not be the case, but it’s important to consider here.

If Alvarez continues to deal with this injury over the next few weeks, the Astros will have to take action.

Replacing him will be nearly impossible, as there are only a handful of hitters, if any, who are better than him from the left side.
