Can Joao Pedro play for Chelsea in Club World Cup clash against Palmeiras?

Chelsea have continued their summer transfer business with the addition of Brazilian attacker Joao Pedro from Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Blues keep on bolstering their forwardline as they forked out more than £60m ($82m) to secure his services.

Pedro’s move was completed on Wednesday, and he immediately joined Chelsea’s training base in Miami for the Club World Cup. The Blues have advanced to the quarterfinals, where they will face Palmeiras on July 4.

Interestingly, Pedro was seen sweating it out in training on Wednesday and could be available for selection for the Palmeiras clash. It remains to be seen if manager Enzo Maresca selects the 23-year-old or not.

Chelsea fans are excited for the Palmeiras match, anticipating the chance to watch their new signing, Pedro, in action. Also, another new signing, Estevao, may feature for Palmeiras facing his new team.

The teenage Brazilian sensation has been one of the standout players for Palmeiras in this competition. He is all set to move to Stamford Bridge right after the end of the tournament.

However, Pedro will be looking forward to the Palmeiras game as he is keen to prove his worth to Maresca in a new setting. We can expect the 23-year-old to compete with Delap and Nicolas Jackson for the number 9 spot.

Can Chelsea’s Joao Pedro play at the Club World Cup?

The short answer is yes. The Brazilian is within the rules to feature for Chelsea at the ongoing Club World Cup.

The new rules of the revamped Club World Cup set by FIFA allow all the participating teams to register new players between June 27 to July 3, following the conclusion of the group stage and ahead of the quarterfinals.

While Pedro has already been registered by Chelsea and would be available for selection, Jamie Gittens won’t share the same fate.

Gittens is another player joining the Blues this summer, but he won’t be able to play in the ongoing Club World Cup for the Blues because FIFA does not allow multiple registrations for a single player.

The Englishman has already been featuring in the tournament for Borussia Dortmund and therefore can only join Chelsea after the tournament.
