
The football world has been left devastated by the news that Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota has died in a car accident.
The 28-year-old crashed in the Spanish province of Zamora. His brother, Andre, was also killed in the crash on Thursday, July 3.
The news has triggered shock and sadness from Anfield and beyond. It comes 10 days after Jota married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he also had three children.
The Guardia Civil confirmed the fatal accident on kilometre 65 of the A-52 motorway, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora, with further forensic testing ongoing at the site.
Liverpool supporters have taken Jota to their hearts following his 2020 transfer from Wolves, with their No.20 gaining cult status via his ‘better than Figo’ chant. The Premier League champions have paid tribute to him alongside a host of former teammates and fans.
“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.
“We will continue to provide them with our full support.”
Social media has been filled with messages of support and condolence to Jota’s family as the football family comes together to reflect on a heartbreaking tragedy.
