Nikolaj Ehlers has reportedly finally made his decision. Per insider Kevin Weekes, the prized free agent is on his way to the Carolina Hurricanes. The contract is 8 years by $6.5 million.
The biggest fish of free agency is now off the table. He will be a viable top 6 option moving forward for this Carolina Hurricanes team that is looking to take the next step and break through in the playoffs. The team has failed to get past the eastern conference finals in recent seasons. Ehlers could be the piece that helps take them over the hump.
Ehlers will likely slot into a top line role with this Carolina squad. The Canes offense becomes even deeper as he will join the likes of Sebastian Aho, Andrei Svechnikov, Seth Jarvis, Logan Stankoven and Taylor Hall in the Canes top 6. This will be a fun group to watch.
The 29 year old forward recorded 24 goals and 39 assists for 63 points in 69 games last season with the Jets. He also touted 5 goals and 2 assists in 8 playoff games.
Over the course of his 10 year career in Winnipeg, the Danish native has amassed 225 goals and 295 assists for 520 points in 674 games during his time there. In his playoff career, he has registered 9 goals and 12 assists for 21 points in 45 games. He was drafted by the club 9th overall in the first round of the 2014 draft.
