Brent Burns next career move has been unveiled. The Colorado Avalanche announced yesterday that they have signed the legendary defenseman to a 1 year $1 million deal. The contract also has up to $3 million in bonus clauses.
It was unclear whether Burns would continue his career past this season. It is nice to see the 40 year old carry on. Burns is currently on a 925 consecutive game run, which puts him 4th all time in NHL history. He is only 139 straight games behind the all time Iron Man record holder Phil Kessel.
Burns recorded 6 goals and 23 assists for 29 points in 82 games last season with the Hurricanes. In the playoffs, he registered 1 goal and 4 assists in 15 games. During his 3 year stint with the Canes, Burns amassed 34 goals and 99 assists for 133 points in 246 games.
Brent will add depth and experience to an already stacked Colorado Avalanche defensive core that includes the likes of Cale Makar, Devon Toews, Sam Girard and Josh Manson. He will effectively replace trade deadline rental Ryan Lindgren. He will look to help this Avs squad get over the hump in the playoffs after a disappointing early exit last season.
Over the course of his lengthy 21 year career, Burns has touted 261 goals and 649 assists for 910 points in 1,497 games. Burns is one of the few modern NHL players who has split time as a forward and defenseman throughout his stint.
