Manchester City have made it a habit of planning ahead, both on and off the pitch.
So it’s no surprise that the club is looking to reward Ruben Dias with a new contract, even though his current deal runs until 2027.
But timing is everything — especially when trophies are the currency of success.
Dias has been a rock at the back since arriving from Benfica in 2020. He brought leadership, composure, and plenty of clean sheets. His quick rise to one of the club’s leaders speaks volumes. But last season told a different story.
For the first time in his City career, questions were asked. His form dipped. Injuries didn’t help, but even when fit, Dias looked shaky in some key games.
Long balls caused problems. High defensive lines exposed him. The once-reliable center-back started to look, well… human.

Still, the club sees him as part of the future. Reports (via English journalist Jack Gaughan) say talks are planned “in the next weeks,” and both sides seem open to an agreement.

But the big question remains: Is now the right time?
Should Man City offer Ruben Dias a new contract?
There’s no denying Dias’ past impact. He’s played over 220 games for the club and helped bring in silverware. But recent struggles suggest caution.
Against Al-Hilal, he lost track of Koulibaly. Against Real Madrid, he misread a long ball that led to a goal. Even domestic matches showed cracks, like the loss to Aston Villa, where he was targeted repeatedly.
With the 2025/26 season still weeks away, City have time to reflect. A new deal could tie the club to a player who may be past his best — or just in need of a fresh start.
It’s a tricky call. Loyalty counts, but in football, timing can make or break a decision.
Pep Guardiola’s system is demanding, and if Dias can’t meet the bar again soon, City may have to think twice before putting pen to paper.
