Chargers predicted to pull off unthinkable trade that would rattle the NFL

The Los Angeles Chargers have what is slowly becoming one of the league’s better defensive units, but after losing Joey Bosa and Poona Ford this offseason, there is skepticism that the team could be much weaker up front.

Ford was the force in the middle and Bosa was the team’s longest tenured defensive player and he ranks second on the team’s all-time sacks list. Still, the team moved on from him this offseason in a cost-cutting move and will now move Tuli Tuipolotu into the starting lineup.

The Chargers, who were rumored to be in the mix to acquire Jalen Ramsey, watched as he was traded from the Dolphins to the Steelers on Monday. But what if the Chargers could now take a shot at acquiring a Steelers legend?

Anthony Palacios of Last Word on Sports sees the Chargers as a player if the Steelers truly do look to move T.J. Watt.

“Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Chargers head coach, Jim Harbaugh, wants to win football games with an old-fashioned defense. However, they haven’t added anyone explosive since parting ways with veteran Joey Bosa after spending all of his career in Los Angeles. The Chargers are bringing back Khalil Mack for at least one more year and drafting Kyle Kennard, but they need someone proven to help push this team further in the thick of the postseason. Tuli Tuipulotu hasn’t been the most impressive edge help, and they’re already lacking depth at the position.

Even though the Steelers would never trade to the Chargers, they could at the right price, and it’s manageable for Los Angeles, who have an enormous cap relief”, wrote Palacios.

As Watt holds out for a new deal from the Steelers, there are reports that “multiple teams” have inquired about a deal. That’s not surprising, as he is one of the best defensive players in the league.

Palacios himself seems to acknowledge how unlikely this deal would be, but there is always a price that a team can’t turn down. With that said, assuming the Chargers weren’t willing to pony up the asking price for Ramsey, that price would likely be at least tripled for Watt.

In all likelihood, Watt won’t be going anywhere. If the Steelers were to trade him, it would probably be to an NFC team so they could avoid having to play against him too often.

Watt would look great in a Chargers jersey and the idea of him and Khalil Mack getting after the quarterback together is more than exciting, but some things are too good to be true, and that would be the case with this idea.
