Lionel Messi-led Inter Miami’s journey in the Club World Cup came to an end with a 4-0 loss against Paris Saint-Germain in the Round of 16, on June 29.
After two draws and one win in the group stage, Inter Miami were unable to open their scoring in their first knockout match of the competition, while Messi’s former club were able to find the back of the net four times.
Messi’s efforts on the pitch against PSG, however, are not under question, with the 38-year-old having two shots on target and being involved in two key passes in the full 90 minutes of the clash.
Inter Miami’s elimination from the Club World Cup led to doubts surfacing about Messi’s future at the Major League Soccer side. His contract there is set to expire at the end of this year, and it includes an option for a 12-month extension, which has yet to be agreed upon.
Journalist Esteban Edul claimed that Messi might not be extending his contract with Inter Miami further. He stated that the Argentine icon is considering signing elsewhere for the six months ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
“Leo Messi and his family told me on Friday, that he is considering playing somewhere else for the six months leading up to the World Cup. At one point, he had his contract settled to stay on, but now that’s been put on hold,” said Edul.

Amid these reported uncertainties over his future at the Herons, Messi has also been linked with a move to the Premier League as several reports have suggested that the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is looking to play in a more competitive league ahead of the World Cup.
However, contradictory news about his future has also surfaced, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano sharing an update from Inter Miami club sources about Messi’s future there.
What did Fabrizio Romano say about Lionel Messi’s future?
Romano has stated that both Messi and Inter Miami are in each other’s plans for the near future, and ‘necessary steps’ are in progress.
“Leo is under contract until the end of 2025. The reality is that both parties are interested in continuing the relationship. The necessary steps are being taken with the right mindset to make it happen,” wrote Romano.
Messi and Inter Miami will be returning to MLS action with their match against CF Montreal on June 5 at Saputo Stadium.
