The Boston Red Sox may be falling out of contention. At 42-44, they are seven games back in the American League East. However, they are close in the Wild Card race, sitting just three games back.
One area in particular that could use some work is their starting rotation. Beyond Garrett Crochet, their starting five leaves a lot to be desired.
Walker Buehler has not panned out as their No. 2 starter this season, and they’ll need somebody to slot in next to Crochet.
Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter predicts Boston will trade for Sandy Alcantara.
“The 2022 NL Cy Young winner still represents a potential impact addition to a team’s rotation for the playoff push. His 2.74 ERA in 23 innings over his previous four starts looked like a step toward regaining his frontline form,” Reuter wrote.

Alcantara is 4-8 with a 6.98 ERA in 16 starts with the Miami Marlins. The former Cy Young has clearly struggled in his return from Tommy John surgery.
However, as a starter with at least two more years of team control, he could bring back quite a haul, and the Red Sox have the prospects necessary to pull off a deal.
The 29-year-old right-hander was the National League Cy Young winner in 2022 and is also a two-time All-Star, so he has a solid track record.
The Marlins are a clear seller this season, and while Boston could be trending in that direction, Craig Breslow has stated that it isn’t his goal to do so, and that he would rather add to the club, even after the Rafael Devers trade.
We’ll see where Boston lands on potentially acquiring Alcantara.
