Lionel Messi makes ‘very happy’ claim after Club World Cup exit

Lionel Messi and Inter Miami were on the receiving end of a crushing defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the Round of 16 of the Club World Cup.

This loss saw the end of Inter Miami’s journey in the competition on June 29. The Herons failed to open their scoring against PSG, who found the back of the net four times to book their spot in the quarterfinals.

Even though they were unable to get through their first knockout match in the Club World Cup, Messi led Inter Miami to history by becoming the first Major League Soccer side to beat a European opponent, Porto, in the group stage.

Speaking after the match against his former club, PSG, Messi expressed ‘being happy’ to have been able to compete at this year’s Club World Cup despite the disheartening loss.

What did Lionel Messi say after Inter Miami’s Club World Cup exit?

Messi stated (comments via GOAL) that he believes Inter Miami ‘lived up to the expectations’ while already looking forward to the Herons’ upcoming challenges.

“I think we lived up to expectations. We gave our all and that should help us to achieve what’s truly important, which is what’s coming up. I’m very happy to have been able to compete at this Club World Cup, to have been able to compete even though we’re in a different league and at a different level,” said the Argentine icon.
