Astros announce horrible Jeremy Pena injury update

The Houston Astros are coming off a very strong month of June, in which the team didn’t lose a series, and they had the best record in baseball. But on the final day of June, the Astros were dealt a bit of horrible news.

After the Chicago Cubs series, the Astros announced on Twitter/X that Jeremy Peña has a small fracture in his ribs, which has led the team to place him on the injured list. Peña had extra imaging done recently, and it revealed the full extent of the injury.

With Peña heading to the injured list, the Astros’ best offensive player is now expected to be out for some time. Initially, the reports were concerning, but there was no fracture. However, this update is horrible news for Peña and the Astros.

Peña was likely on his way to the All-Star game in 2025 and was having the best season of his career thus far. In year four, Peña had played 82 games for the Astros and had accumulated 4.5 WAR.

In his 2025 season, Peña had 102 hits, 48 runs scored, 18 doubles, one triple, 11 home runs, 40 RBIs, 15 stolen bases, 20 walks, and 55 strikeouts. He hit .322, had a .378 on-base percentage, and had a .489 slugging percentage before his injury.

Peña was on pace to smash his previous career highs in almost every offensive category, while also playing elite defense. The former Gold Glover was coming into his own offensively, but now it’s been put on hold.

It’s a huge blow to the Astros and Peña, as the 2025 season was proving to be the best of his career so far. Peña is now expected to miss some time, and while he is likely to return at some point this season, a fractured rib is a tricky injury to recover from.

His timeline is unknown for now, and the Astros will need to work around his absence for the foreseeable future. Peña was a huge contributor for the Astros in 2025, and now, he’s set to miss extended time after getting a horrible injury update.
