It’s no secret that the Dallas Mavericks are seeking backcourt help this offseason, and a former All-Star may be on their radar.
With Kyrie Irving not likely to return to the court until at least January, Dallas is expected to scour the market for an experienced facilitator to step up in his absence. The team is currently shorthanded at the point guard position, and rumors have circulated about potential interest in veteran guards like Chris Paul and Russell Westbrook.
However, the Mavericks may ultimately pivot in another direction — and are reportedly among the favorites to land D’Angelo Russell, according to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line.
Russell could help bridge the gap until Irving returns and is viewed as a more attainable option than either Paul or Westbrook.
The 10-year veteran has averaged at least five assists per game in eight consecutive seasons and remains a proven scorer, with a career average of 17.4 points per game. The Ohio State product could be a strong fit to complement the club’s offensive core in Irving’s absence, which includes Anthony Davis, Cooper Flagg and Klay Thompson.
Russell has bounced around in recent years, suiting up for three teams in the past three seasons. While the 29-year-old may no longer be playing at an All-Star level, stepping into a prove-it situation with a contending team like Dallas could help revitalize his career.
Russell won’t be tasked with carrying the offensive load as a top option, but a fresh start in Dallas could prove mutually beneficial.
