The Denver Broncos are looking to build a capable group of targets for Bo Nix at the wide receiver position, growing young talent to do so.
Following the team’s loss to the Buffalo Bills in last year’s playoffs, the assumption was that the team would load up on offensive weapons this offseason and give Nix all of the firepower that they possibly could. Instead, the only major move they made in free agency was to sign tight end Evan Engram and the team will instead rely on a young but exciting group of wide receivers to grow with Nix.
Following the draft, the Broncos brought in four wide receivers as undrafted free agents. Courtney Jackson, Jerjuan Newton and Kyrese White have all been profiled already, but the most intriguing player in the group is the subject of this spotlight, Joaquin Davis.
Name: Joaquin Davis
Height: 6-foot-4
Weight: 195
Position: Wide receiver
School: North Carolina Central
Born in Durham, North Carolina, Davis spent four years at North Carolina Central and recorded statistics in three of those, finishing his career with 92 receptions for 1,211 yards and 12 touchdowns. He had a quiet college career due to playing at a small school, but he has the physical frame of a professional wide receiver who could have a chance to become a solid NFL player.
Davis has elite speed to go along with tremendous size and length and whenever an athlete possesses a combination of those traits, professional coaches are eager to work with them. He lettered in basketball in high school and could have pursued that sport at the college level as well.
Chances of making final 53-man roster (1-10 scale): 2
Most NFL teams keep no more than six wide receivers on their final roster and if Denver follows suit, those six spots may already be claimed by Courtland Sutton, Marvin Mims Jr., Troy Franklin, Devaughn Vele, Pat Bryant and Trent Sherfield.
An injury to one of those players could open the door, but the likelihood is that the four undrafted players on the roster will be battling with A.T. Perry and Michael Bandy for spots on the practice squad. Davis should be considered a top prospect for the practice squad as he is a big wide receiver with lightning-fast speed and that is desired in today’s NFL.
He will be one of the most intriguing players to watch in training camp and preseason games this summer. If he flashes the ability to make plays such as catching a deep ball or making an incredible catch in any of the preseason games, the team is going to want to further tap into his potential.
Unless he just completely struggles at the professional level and displays himself just to be a big athlete who won’t be able to transfer his skills to the NFL, I would expect Davis to be a good bet to be part of this year’s practice squad.
