Vegas’ Pietrangelo likely out for 25-26 season

Unfortunate news has developed for the Vegas Golden Knights today. Per insider David Pagnotta, defenseman Alex Pietrangelo will miss the entire 25-26 season due to injury.

The details of the injury and exact timeline is murky. From the reports it sounds as if Pietrangelo will have to undergo surgeries this summer that will keep him out of the lineup for at least next season, maybe more.

This is a big loss for the Vegas Golden Knights blueline. The 35 year old dman has established himself as a key part of their premier backend. He recorded 4 goals and 29 assists for 33 points in 71 games last season, including 2 goals and 4 assists in 10 playoff games.

The 17 year veteran has been an integral part of this Vegas team since the former St. Louis Blue was signed in the 2020 offseason. The 2 time Stanley Cup Champion has registered 39 goals and 148 assists in his 5 season tenure with the club.

Pietrangelo’s loss would create a massive hole in the Knights top 4 D core. If he were to go on LTIR, that would be $8.8 million that would come off the books to plug that hole while he’s away. His contract runs until the 26-27 season.

It will be interesting to see how this developing news affects the Vegas Golden Knights offseason plans. Do they prioritize patching up a wounded defense or continue to go all steam ahead in their pursuit of the Maple Leafs Mitch Marner?
