A scary scene happened Sunday afternoon in Cleveland.
In the top of the third inning the Guardians’ game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Cardinals hitter Masyn Winn hit a ball in the hole heading to left field, and Guardians shortstop Gabriel Arias slid to field the ball as it traveled away from him.
Arias did get up, but held his ankle in pain. Cleveland’s Guardians trainers immediately gave Arias medical attention on the field, but Arias could not put any weight on his ankle and was carted off.
Daniel Schneemann entered the game at shortstop and took Arias’ spot in the lineup.
Arias has been one of the Guardians better hitters this season as he is batting .232 with six home runs and 31 RBIs. In Saturday’s 9-6 loss to the Cardinals, Arias went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a home run.
Arias has been a defensive gem for Cleveland this season. Arias ranks in the 87th percentile with eight outs above average and the 92nd percentile in arm strength.
As of now, there is no confirmation on the injury or the exact nature of the injury. Depending on how much time Arias misses could impact Cleveland’s push for the postseason.
The Guardians have lost three consecutive games and the losing streak will be extended to four if they do not come back from a 7-0 deficit today. Cleveland entered the day 40-41 and 1.5 games behind the Mariners for the final spot in the wild card race.
