Red Wings find new goalie in trade with Ducks

The first big trade during the 2025 NHL Draft has happened and it is between the Detroit Red Wings and the Anaheim Ducks.

The Red Wings are sending goalie Petr Mrazek, a 2027 second round pick and a 2026 fourth-rounder in exchange for Ducks goalie John Gibson.

The Red Wings have been in need of a goalie for quite some time now and Detroit is hoping this trade will finally be the answer in the net at least for now.

Detroit spent the 2024-2025 season with a carousel of goalies between Mrazek, Cam Talbot and Alex Lyon. Talbot performed the best of the three as he finished with a 21-19-5 record and a 2.93 GAA with a save percentage of 90 percent.

Mrazek and Lyon struggled all season, posting records of 12-21-2 and 14-9-1 respectively. Talbot has a GAA of 3.34 while Lyon finished at 2.81.

Gibson appeared in only 29 games this past season with a lower body injury. When he was in, he played solidly. Gibson racked up 11 wins for a record of 11-11-2 and a save percentage of .911 with 2.77 GAA.

The goalie competition for top spot in Detroit will likely be between Gibson and Talbot. The question that remains to be seen out of Gibson is whether he can continue the performance during last season or in the past.

Gibson has not had a winning record since 2018, which was also the last time he had a GAA of under 3.00 when playing the length of a season.
