Red Sox’s Craig Breslow announces plan for trade deadline as team struggles

The Boston Red Sox have not lived up to expectations so far this season. They were two games below .500 entering play on Friday, but are still in striking distance of a wild card spot.

The Red Sox have traded away their franchise player in Rafael Devers, and are seeing an array of young players try to take the team as far as they can. It’s not what the team envisioned in the offseason, but chief baseball officer Craig Breslow is still focused on this season and not the future.

“I think we’ve talked a lot about looking to the future, at some point, the future has to be now,” Breslow told The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey. “We went into 2025 expecting to compete for the division and expecting to make it to the playoffs. We haven’t played as well as we’re capable of, but that goal still exists, and we’re not so far away that we should be thinking about 2026 or 2027.

“There’s a lot of games to be played between now and the deadline, but we are thinking about how we bolster the team,” he said. “How we do identify the needs that we have and are aggressive in getting those players to put us in a position that we talked about all offseason.”

Breslow’s comments after the Devers have been consistent. He is not throwing in the towel on this season. He wants to be in a position to add to his squad and make a postseason push. Despite losing five straight and trading away Devers, the Red Sox are just 2 1/2 games out of a wild card spot, entering play on Friday.

With Devers gone, the burden to produce is on the young core the Red Sox have been waiting on for years. Wilyer Abreu, Ceddanne Rafaela, Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer are all in a position to help the team in a big way. They will face adversity as young players. Campbell was recently sent to Triple-A after some struggles, but he still figures to be a big part of what the team is building.
