Manchester United’s search for a new center-back has hit a major snag. Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, one of United’s top defensive targets, is reportedly set to sign a new contract with the Toffees.
That puts a full stop — at least for now — on United’s long-running pursuit.
For months, Branthwaite looked like the perfect fit at Old Trafford. Young, calm under pressure, and a left-footed center-back — he ticked all the boxes.
But despite two bids last summer and plenty of renewed interest this year, United haven’t been able to seal the deal.
Now, with Everton apparently offering him an improved contract and a starring role in their plans, Branthwaite appears ready to commit his future to the Merseyside club.
According to reports (via The Athletic), the new contract is expected to run until 2030, making him one of the highest-paid players at Goodison Park.

That’s no small reward for a player who made his senior England debut last summer and played nearly every minute of Everton’s strong second half of the season.
Why Man Utd wanted Jarrad Branthwaite?
United’s interest wasn’t hard to figure out. The Red Devils are planning a major defensive rebuild. With Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof set to leave, and Harry Maguire’s future uncertain, the club is in need of fresh legs and composure at the back.
Branthwaite looked like the ideal partner for Lisandro Martínez. At just 23, he has already shown maturity beyond his years.
And in a team that spent a good chunk of last season defending their own box, he stood tall. But this is one transfer United fans will now have to chalk up as the one that got away.
Everton manager David Moyes was clear, in April he said:
“I wouldn’t think that Jarrad is one of the players I would want to lose, that’s for sure.”
As United go back to the drawing board, Everton fans will be celebrating this one like a new signing — because in today’s market, keeping your best players can feel like winning the league.
