The NBA has never had a player born in Nicaragua play in a regular season game.
Norchad Omier wants to change that.
And he’s getting a chance to impress this summer. The Cleveland Cavaliers signed him to an Exhibit 10 contract, according to KCRA’s Sean Cunningham. That will give Omier an opportunity in Summer League, and if he doesn’t earn a two-way deal with the Cavs, the Exhibit 10 setup incentivizes him to stay in their organization in the G League.
Omier was born in Bluefields, Nicaragua.
He moved as a teenager to Miami, Florida, where he played at Miami Prep and averaged 26.7 points and 20.3 rebounds per game.
Now 6-foot-7, 248 pounds, Omier began his college career at Arkansas State.
He spent two seasons with the Red Wolves, leading the Sun Belt in field goal percentage and rebounding in both campaigns. As a sophomore, he averaged 17.9 points, 12.2 rebounds, 1.9 blocks and 1.6 steals per game on 63.2% shooting.

From there, he went to Miami for two seasons. In 2023-24, he put up 17 points and 10 rebounds per game.
Omier transferred to Baylor for his final college season and averaged 15.7 points and 10.8 rebounds per game on 55.6% shooting.
Now, Omier joins a Cavs organization coming off the No. 1 seed in the East but a disappointing second-round playoff exit to the Pacers.
Cleveland has a lot of established size on its roster, but a chunk of its bench is likely to leave in free agency.
Omier has a path to history, and now it’s his time to make the most of it.
