It appears the hockey team that has dominated headlines of late for all the wrong reasons may not be done. That team in question of course being the Buffalo Sabres. Could they deal yet another young promising core piece, you ask? Yes. According to insider Darren Dreger, there are as many as 8 teams that have interest in making a trade for Bowen Byram.
The known specific teams referenced are the Vegas Golden Knights, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues, Vancouver Canucks, Colorado Avalanche, Philadelphia Flyers and Toronto Maple Leafs. It appears the Leafs tradition of being connected to every player on the trade block or open market continues.
These rumors follow up the blockbuster trade last night involving star 23 year old forward JJ Peterka. Why the Buffalo Sabres would think to follow up that move by shipping out a young 24 defenseman on the rise who is coming off his best season in the NHL is baffling.
Bowen Byram recorded 7 goals and 31 assists for 38 points in 81 games last season. The 2019 4th overall pick and 2022 Stanley Cup Champ has dealt with injuries throughout his career. But when he’s healthy, he has proven to be an effective top 4 defenseman. He was acquired by the Sabres from the Avalanche in the 2024 trade deadline for Casey Mittelstadt.
With the recent fleecing of Sabres GM Kevyn Adams in the Peterka deal, it should not be surprising to see teams lining up in the queue to get in on the action. We’ll see which side takes this bidding war if Bowen Byram’s time in Buffalo comes to an end.
