The 2025 NFL season will be here before we know it, and for a team like the New York Giants, it will be the start of a prove-it year for a few of the most important people in the organization.
Head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen are on the hottest seats in the NFL, and when the team’s top two decision makers are facing a do-or-die season, drastic moves could be made at a moment’s notice.
One of those drastic moves could be trading edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux, who ESPN suggested Big Blue should ship out of town before the 2025 season kicks off.
“Yes, New York can use an edge rusher rotation and get plenty of value out of him,” ESPN’s Aaron Schatz wrote. “It can create a NASCAR-style package where one of its edge rushers moves inside on third down. But the Giants can also trade Thibodeaux to a contender that needs help on the edge, such as the Packers or the Lions, and probably get a Day 2 pick in return. More draft capital would be a huge help for 2026 when they’ll be trying to find as many strong offensive players as possible to build around quarterback Jaxson Dart and wide receiver Malik Nabers.”
Giants can take their time with Kayvon Thibodeaux
There’s logic on both sides of the Thibodeaux debate. The Giants should feel under no pressure to trade the former first-round pick simply because they have Brian Burns and Abdul Carter on the roster for the long term. Having a three-headed pass-rushing monster is an NFL luxury; if you have it, you try to keep it.

But the New York Giants are still several pieces away from being a contender. They can’t afford luxuries at this point, so if Kayvon Thibodeaux can be flipped into a valuable second-round pick? Sure, Giants fans can get behind that, too.
Thibodeaux has been solid yet unspectacular since being drafted by the New York Giants with the fifth overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft. His best season came in 2023 when he registered 11.5 sacks. He’s totaled 9.5 sacks in his other two seasons (26 games) combined.
I wouldn’t expect Thibodeaux to be traded anytime soon, though. The Giants exercised the fifth-year option in his contract, keeping him within New York’s control through 2026 and beyond.
It would be unwise to consider trading him anytime before the start of the season. Injuries to Burns, Carter, or another team’s top pass rusher would result in a massive increase in Thibodeaux’s value, making him worth holding onto.
