76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe looks like the truth in NBA Summer League debut

When VJ Edgecombe side-stepped a defender in transition, rose up and threw down a right-handed tomahawk slam, it was clear that he had arrived.

But it was in every other second on the floor that an even more important fact became clear: Edgecombe is the truth.

The Philadelphia 76ers rookie, the No. 3 pick in the NBA Draft out of Baylor, made his NBA Summer League debut in Salt Lake City on Saturday night. And yeah, he had the SCTop10 level highlight.

He also did everything else, all night long. He was clearly, unequivocally the best player on the floor.

Edgecombe dropped 28 points, on 13-27 shooting. He grabbed 10 rebounds. He dished out four assists. He even blocked a pair of shots and had a steal.

He was a plus-10, tops on the 76ers in a game they lost by four points. When Edgecombe was in the game, they were the better team. When he sat for short stints, they got smoked.

Edgecombe’s fit on the big 76ers won’t be as high-usage. Tyrese Maxey will soak up a lot of the guard actions. If Joel Embiid is healthy, he’ll get the ball a lot.

But on this first night, Edgecombe showed he’s the future. Philadelphia got this pick right, if we’re allowed to make such determinations after one basketball game in the middle of July.

Edgecombe is here, he’s arrived and he’s the truth.
